Precarious Work 2011
On 7th October ITUC's fourth edition of World Day for Decent Work took place. In the run up to this global day on which the trade unions in the world stood up for decent work, the EMF callled on its affiliates to step up their activities in the framework of its Precarious Work campaign. Affiliates were invited to inform the EMF of any actions or campaigns which were taking place in connection with the topic.
Eurofound produce revealing report on the job structure during the crisis
Eurofound - the European Foundation for the Improvement of Living and Working Conditions - produced a report "Shifts in the job structure in Europe during the Great Recession" which basically found that:
- employment continued to grow in top-paying jobs, largely in knowledge-intensive services and business services.
- sharp losses in medium-paying jobs in construction and manufacturing led to a shrinking of employment in the middle of the wage spectrum.
- More jobs were lost to men than to women and employment levels of older workers grew while those of younger workers declined

Croatian trade unionists pressure Croatian parliamentarians for better employment contracts
UATUC and NHS will gather in front of the Croatian Parliament, prior to the session of the Parliament, to distribute leaflets to MPs, explaining the objectives of the WDDW campaign, precarious work as well as pushing for better employment contracts.
Over 20,000 young metalworkers took to the streets in Cologne Germany for fixed employment contracts and securer futures!
1st October, Cologne Youth Action Day:
Under the slogan "Loud and Strong" over 20.000 young workers employed in German metal industries called for improved job security and open-ended employment contracts at the end of apprenticeships in the companies where they received the training. This action day marked the culmination of an IG Metall campaign, "Operation Übernahme" - a campaign seeking to ensure companies hire the apprentices they train.

Solidarity with the Association of Free Trade Unions of Slovenia
The EMF expresses its full solidarity and support with the Association of Free Trade Unions of Slovenia against the Slovenian Government's determination to enforce a new form of work, which will substantially reduce workers’ rights and increase precarious work.
No to precarious and Irregular Work
In the first demonstration against labor law reform, Birlesik Metal Is members oppose the employers’ association proposal to peg the national agreement to labor law changes that flexibilize employment and working conditions.

Turkish metalworkers rally against precarious work
On 28 November 2010 Birlesik Metal-Is is organising a rally in the industrial city of Gebze, Turkey to protest against the flexible and precarious working conditions imposed by the collective agreement signed between Turk Metal and Metal Product Industrialists’ Association (MESS).
Ten demands for decent work
No trace left of the decent work in Croatia - around 100 000 jobs have been lost since the beginning of the crisis.
Two thirds of those who still work get the wage lower than the average wage. As much as 70 000 workers work without being paid for their work. There is almost no end to this negative list!
European Parliament adopts Resolution on women in precarious work
On 19 October 2010 the European parliament adopted a Resolution on women in precarious work.
The resolution states that precarious work affects women more than men and that the over-representation of women in precarious work is a key contributing factor to the gender pay gap.
Workplace fatalities continue in Turkish shipyards
The EMF is outraged that workplace fatalities continue in Turkish shipyards.
On 2 October 2010 the body of a shipyard worker from Tuzla (Çiçek shipyard) was discovered in the sea, where his death four days earlier had gone unnotized.
World Day for Decent Work 2010
Following a decision of the 2nd ITUC World Congress in Vancouver, Canada, the ITUC is to convene the 3rd World Day for Decent Work (WDDW).
The Day takes place, as usual, on 7 October.
In previous years, the WDDW has involved millions of trade unionists in action for Decent Work, and in today’s conditions of crisis it is more important than ever that trade unionists across the globe stand up for their rights to decent work and a decent life.

International Forum on Decent Work
On 10-11 October 2010 the Belgian EU Presidency is organising an International Forum on Decent Work.
The Forum aims at finding out if there is a new global momentum for the promotion of decent work and to identify the challenges for the external dimension of European Union employment and social policies.
The EMF Deputy General Secretary Bart Samyn has been invited to speak at the Forum.
EMF communicators focus on precarious work
Communicators from EMF affiliated organisations are meeting in Brussels on 6-7 October to exchange experiences and maximise the outcome of the. EMF Second Common Demand on Precarious Work
The meeting takes place on the World Day For Decent Work and aims at strengthening the communcations aspect of EMF policy work on the issue.
Decent Work instead of Working Poor
Europe's concepts to combat Poverty and Social Exclusion
on Wednesday, 6 October 2010 at 19.00h at the Representation of the State of Hessen on 19, Avenue de l’Yser, 1040 Brussels.
Around 80 million EU citizens are currently living in poverty – that’s the reality in the European Year for Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion 2010. Employment itself no longer offers protection from poverty. Whereas in the past a job guaranteed a decent quality of life, today it often fails to ensure even a living wage.
A number of high-ranking representatives from politics, trade unions and academia will discuss with an interested audience whether the EU and its member states can successfully combat the "Working Poor" and "Poverty in spite of work" - and how this can be done.

Metalicy, Bulgaria organises consecutive sports event
From 1-5 September 2010 Metalicy, Bulgaria held the traditional sport games under the motto: "Mobilising globally against precarious work".
Metalicy has developed and disseminated a poster, T-shirts and a brochure (only in Bulgarian).

FIM-FIOM-UILM of Italy sign agreement with ILVA management on important workplace issues

Worker dies in forklift accident in Turkey’s Tuzla shipyards

Junge Metaller protestieren für feste Jobs
Hamburg (dpa/lno) - Am ‚‚Welttag für menschenwürdige Arbeit’’ des internationalen Gewerkschaftsbundes haben am Mittwoch im Norden rund 15 000 Auszubildende für bessere Berufsaussichten demonstriert. Bei der Hamburger Schiffswerft Blohm + Voss baute die IG Metall Jugend am frühen Morgen Mauern aus Pappkartons auf. Um fünf vor zwölf ließen die 145 Auszubildenden des Betriebes Luftballons aufsteigen, an denen Postkarten mit ihren Zukunftswünschen befestigt waren. Sie sollten darauf hinweisen, dass Jugendliche nach ihrer Ausbildung keine klare berufliche Perspektive haben.

International aktion mod usikre job
I ly af den økonomiske krise bliver flere og flere lønmodtagere ansat på usikre vilkår. De bliver i stigende grad ansat på gentagne korttidsansættelser, de må tage job som vikarer, hvor ansættelsesforholdene ikke svarer til de fastansattes, eller deres ansættelseskontrakt er uden et specificeret timeantal.
Derfor er 7. oktober blevet udråbt til international aktivitetsdag mod usikre job, også kaldet prekære ansættelser.

Action against Precarious Work in Finland
On October 6 the Finnish IMF-EMF affiliates (Metalli, TU, UIL and TEK) will arrange a seminar where the afternoon session is dedicated to precarious and decent work, relating it to temporary and contract labour, the behaviour of TNCs, and the conditions of work of foreign workers in Finland.
Participants of the seminar are shopstewards of big multinational companies like Nokia, Kone, Metso, Rautaruukki, STX Europe, ABB, Sisu-Diesel and YIT as well as union officials.

FIM-CISL is planning two particular activities during the week of action on precarious work.
DGB calls on its affiliates to organise and participate in actions on 7th October for WDDW

IG Metall letter to heads of federal states on enforcing new regulations for agency workers
In an open letter to the prime ministers of the different federal states in Germany IG Metall supports efforts to enforce new regulations for agency workers. IG Metall President Berhold Huber and Vice President Detlef Wetzel call on the head of the federal states to "assume responsibility for the fairness on the labour market".

Last Wednesday the FGTB (Belgium) organised its fifth Precarious Work day
In different regions actions were held: newspapers (The Interim Times) were distributed in railway stations and a European Seminar was organised in which FGTB General Secretary (Ortwin Magnus) spoke .

Seven workers, out of which five were precariously employed at the Prvi partizan ammunition factory in Uzice, Serbia, died in a tragic accident on September 3rd 2009.
October 7 World Day for Decent Work – Get the World to Work
With four weeks to go until the World Day for Decent Work on October 7, ITUC General Secretary Guy Ryder has issued a call to action headed “Get the World to Work” to encourage participation in the worldwide mobilisation to tackle the global economic and employment crisis and ensure fundamental reform of the world economy. Trade unions in every region are gearing up for their October 7 activities, with organisations from more than 30 countries having already posted information on their events onto the special website www.wddw.org.
World Day for Decent Work (WDDW) 7th October 2009
Global labour’s World Day for Decent Work next month will reveal a wide swath of economic, social, and gender neglect that assails millions of workers, but nowhere is that neglect as evident anywhere as it is to contract and agency workers.
The ICEM, in unity with several other Global Union Federations (GUFs) and the Council of Global Unions, will use the day – 7 October, and indeed, the days before and after – to highlight the need to bring respectability and work rights to contract and agency workers. On 7 October Vasas performed a "freezing flash mob", which was an action taking place in major Hungarian cities such as Budapest, Győr, Pécs, Miskolc, Zalaegerszeg, Dunaújváros with cooperation of the cofedaretion /MSZOSZ/.
The objective was to act at the same time and do the same thing. In the city of Győr the union also invited people to an "after party" called "the late night shift", which was a concert with a very popular Hungarian hip-hop group.
