ETUC 7 October world day of action for decent work
Dear colleagues,
As you are certainly aware, the International Trade Union Confederation will sponsor on 7 October a world day of action for decent work all around the world.
This international day of action will put the accent on the urgent need for a new globalisation and lay the foundations for the trade union movement’s participation in the joint action on every continent.
In spite of global economic expansion, the greater part of the world’s population not only is seeing no improvement in its standard of living, but also suffers from high unemployment, under-employment for many workers or even non-payment of salaries for work performed.
That is why the ETUC urges all its member organisations in Europe to support the ITUC’s day of action on 7 October. The activities you organise at national level for the world day could be based on three themes, for example:
- the right to work
- solidarity
- the eradication of poverty and inequalities
The aim of the world day on 7 October is to organise as many events as possible. It is extremely important for the activities organised at national level by the ETUC member organisations to be publicised in other countries and with the general public, in order to give this action optimal visibility and impact at international level.
You may contact us to keep us informed about your activities. And to learn more about the actions being carried out by other trade union organisations, see the ETUC and ITUC websites.
Trade union rally in Paris
7 October, 17:00 to 19:00
In the framework of the French Presidency of the European Union, the French trade union organisations that are members of the ETUC (CGT, CFDT, UNSA, FO and CFTC) have decided, by common agreement with the ETUC, to organise a European trade union rally, on 7 October in Paris, on the theme "For decent work and decent pay". French, European and international trade union leaders will participate (speeches) and music will be provided by several French and international artists. The rally will demand:
- respect for the fundamental social rights adopted by the ILO in 1998, which the states are obliged to apply;
- sustainable jobs, matched with guaranteed social protection, decent salaries and working conditions that are respectful of health and human dignity.
Venue: Place des droits de l’homme, Trocadéro
To make this rally in Paris a success at European level, we invite the ETUC member organisations to make a special effort to take part and to support the event by sending a national delegation.
Yours sincerely
John Monks
General Secretary
